A Moment, A Lifetime

A Moment, A Lifetime – A Poem by Shashikant Dudhgaonkar

A Moment, A Lifetime

By Shashikant Dudhgaonkar

Saw a couple in the street
Waiting to cross
Was driving in a traffic
That crawled and stopped
Could watch those birds
In love for long
Why I watched what held my gaze
Realised when they had gone past

They stood close unaware of the world
Gently brushing each other’s clothes
They smiled they spoke laughed at their jokes
A good-natured warmth ample on show

She said something he instantly smiled
He said something
That lit in her eyes
A thousand twinkling stars

No elaborate dress nor a bride bejewelled
Ease and comfort that shouted decades
Of living together and knowing it all

Love’s bubbling stream may have lost its steam
As madness ebbs after a time
Making its way to depth and calm
A river that was full of life
