Devil’s Advocate

Devil’s Advocate – A Poem by Shashikant Dudhgaonkar

Devil’s Advocate

I see the signs of darkness
hidden behind the clouds,
creeping ahead with assured steps
from all sides,
lured by the pleasure
of swallowing whole
a place
that still glows.

I make my stand
then and there
no place to run,
no place to hide.
Courage is forced
when cowardice
has no choice
but to yield
to bravado.

And I stand
beneath a flickering lamp,
trying to save myself
and the light
the only way I know
to live.
Yet now I’m unsure
of what I know,
or what I feel.

Lately,
a ghost of suspicion
haunts my mind:
What if I see it wrong?
What if darkness
is the welcome light,
and light the shadow
we must fight?

The ghost feeds,
swells on doubt,
till it devours everything
from the dark
to the last
bright spark.
