Glass of Water

Glass of Water – A Poem by Shashikant Dudhgaonkar

Glass of Water

By Shashikant Dudhgaonkar

You had come home for a while and gone
Didn’t stay for long
Had a lot of work you said
And I accepted
Though reluctantly
Kept watching as you crossed the threshold
And disappeared from my sight
Completely
Didn’t close the door on you
Watching it bang against the doorframe
Not locking at all

Glass of water half empty
Sits calmly on the table
Recollecting moments when it had felt
Your warm lips
I too search for stains
Of your flaming red lips
Traces might have been left inadvertently
On the glass’s edge
And even if they are not there
I imagine them

Have yet to get up from my seat
The conversation that we had
Plays in a delicious loop

And I savour it as I wait for the glass
To be the one to make the move
Don’t want to lose the battle
Of staying still
While the door keeps banging itself
On the doorframe
The only one to move
