Under the Rock

Under the Rock

At the sign of a few sparks

Not my problem saying

It had slithered under a rock

Letting others do the firefighting

Sometimes one can get away

Sometimes fire catches up

Reaching the rock one hides under

Making life uncomfortable under it

Perspiring from heat

The scorpion finally ventured out

For air

The urge to fight rises

With loss of comfort

Principles suppressed by practicality

Make a comeback

When all efforts at not taking sides

Don’t bear fruit

One reluctantly decides to fight back

But it’s too late by then

Before it’s consumed with the fire of bravery

From inside

Flames envelop it from outside

Burning it down

  1. Shashi, I love how you capture the tension between practicality and principle, and the way the imagery of the scorpion under the rock builds up to the inevitable moment of reckoning.

    Much love,
