Rethinking Our Heroes: A Tribute to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar
By Shashikant Dudhgaonkar
However, there’s a deep flaw in how we celebrate these heroes. More often than not, our reverence is selective. We uplift the heroes from our communities, while dismissing or ignoring those from others. Sometimes, we go so far as to be openly antagonistic toward the respect that others receive. We label their legacy as overhyped, their contributions as irrelevant. And ironically, we often turn our own heroes into objects of worship—something they themselves would have likely opposed.
What we fail to recognize is that this selective admiration reflects our own biases and prejudices. When we disregard the contributions of others to our nation’s development, we are not just being unfair—we are reinforcing the very social divisions that our heroes struggled to overcome.
For any society aiming for sustainable progress, such narrow-mindedness is a serious roadblock. We cannot move forward while clinging to parochial pride. Progress demands that we soften our biases, if not eliminating them altogether. This is not an easy task. It requires introspection, empathy, and a willingness to step beyond the boundaries of identity. But it is possible, and it is necessary—because the future of our nation, our communities, and our children depends on it.
His contributions to reducing societal schisms are unparalleled. A man born into the most oppressed section of society, he rose to become one of the most towering figures in modern history. But his greatness lies not just in personal achievement—it lies in his mission to uplift others. He fought not only for the rights of the downtrodden but also worked to liberate the rest of society from their own cruel and deeply ingrained prejudices.
Dr. Ambedkar believed that true progress could never be one-sided. A society can only move forward when it ensures justice, equality, and dignity for all its members. He reminded us that liberty is not just the absence of bondage—it is the act of rising above the mental conditioning that shackles us.
His life and legacy continue to inspire generations to imagine and work toward a more inclusive, egalitarian future. But honoring his memory means more than posting tributes once a year. It requires us to reflect on our own biases, to celebrate contributions from every corner of society, and to ensure that our admiration of heroes is rooted in values and not just in identity.
Let us, then, broaden our hearts and minds. Let us strive to truly understand and honor those who shaped our nation—whether or not they come from our own community. In doing so, we pay the highest respect to the legacy of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar—and take one step closer to the just, equitable society he envisioned for us all.
