Stoic in the Rain

Stoic in the Rain

By Shashikant Dudhgaonkar

On a recent ride outside town, I came across a wild peacock, drenched and still in the rain.
This rare moment stirred something quiet and contemplative in me.
I have captured it on video and tried to do that in verse.

Stoic in the Rain

On a sedate journey
After a tiring grind
Came across something
That pulled me upright

Perched on a stack of logs
Not dancing but standing still
A peacock stared ahead
Ignoring the rain the world and me

From the moving car
With a passing glance
It looked like statue
Made and coloured well
And then it moved its head
And I stopped

Bewilderment gave way to amazement
At the visually stunning, philosophically stoic
And serene experience
One usually misses in the moment
To realise later on

Drenched in a drizzle
Enveloped in a monsoon gloom
That can turn one cranky
And dark at times
A bouquet of moods
Dangling by my side
I choose often the one
That I shouldn’t have
Wrong one at the right times,
Right one at the wrong times
Rarely matching the universe’s vibe

Though the universe never does it
It never loses its poise
It has a way to surprise
In moments and in places
In the least expected of times
Picking out that one single emotion
The only one it has
That’s visually stunning
And philosophically stoic
