Collective Denial

Collective Denial | Poem by Shashikant Dudhgaonkar

Collective Denial

They have always won
Never ever lost
Anything
And convey that to the world
Loudly, subtly, indirectly
In person, at gatherings
And on social media
With a belief strong
In their own deceit

Deep inside their souls
Tired, stretched thin
Nursing multiple scars
Disappointments, heartbreaks and losses
Unexpected
Shed lonely tears

And the souls try to fall back on memories
Though the mind declines access
To the past
And any other thought
Keeping the soul immobilised
In a grandiose pretence

While outside
Bridges underflow with homeless
Opulence reaches the skies
War rages in places
Death working overtime
While elsewhere lingers
A peace fragile
